Sonodyne SM50Ak

Sonodyne, Adam, Genelec 1029

The Sonodyne journey into studio sound and design began with the SM50Ak. India, in the wake of embracing a global economy in 2005, issued several hundred FM licenses. This, in conjunction with a thriving cinema industry in Mumbai (Bollywood), prompted the introduction of a new range of cost effective yet high performance studio monitors. Experienced sound engineers, upon hearing the SM50Ak, remarked that it was among the best small monitors they had ever monitored on.
The Sonodyne SM50AK is a die-cast aluminium, 2-way nearfield active monitor, with a Magnetically shielded 5.25" Kevlar cone woofer and 26mm silk dome ferrofluid cooled tweeter with integral waveguide.

The SM 50Ak is ideal for not only desktop editing but also serious audio monitoring. It provides a well articulated yet full bodied response from its compact enclosure. The highs are open, the mids well resolved, and the bass, detailed and tight. Magnetically shielded, it may be placed beside video monitors.

Sonodyne SM100Ak

Sonodyne-SM100AK-Pair-1000x720
The award winning Sonodyne SM100Ak is a die-cast aluminium, 2-way nearfield active monitor, with a Magnetically shielded 6.5" Kevlar cone woofer and 26mm silk dome ferrofluid cooled tweeter with integral waveguide. It features an extended LF response compared to its smaller sibling, the SM50Ak and also offers a wider sweet-spot. This, in conjunction with a higher SPL, readies it for the more demanding applications such as multi-channel audio monitoring in larger rooms.

The SM100AK is already becoming a firm favourite with many engineers, writers and producers all claiming that the SM100AK offers unrivalled detail and imaging and also prefer the tonal quality and 'musicality' of these rock-solid speakers.
The Sonodyne SM100Ak is perfect for recording, mixing, post-production and broadcast applications.

Sonodyne SM200Ak

Sonodyne, Adam, Dynaudio, Genelec, KRK
The New SM200Ak is 2 way studio reference monitor with exceptional frequency bandwidth and sound pressure level making it an ideal solution for broadcast, post-production and professional studios.
The SM200Ak enclosure combines the best of two cabinet worlds: wood and aluminium. The sturdy aluminium die cast baffle ensures that the 8" Kevlar LF and the 1" metal dome HF are firmly mounted and vibration is minimized. Additionally the curved edges of this solid baffle also minimize diffraction. This baffle also features an integral waveguide for the HF, resulting in precise imaging and exceptional on and off axis response.

The inbuilt low distortion amplifier module continuously provides 150 watt to the LF and 100 watt to the HF and feature room compensating bass and treble tilts useful in difficult acoustical environments.

Review Verdict
Sonodyne are an up-and-coming brand breaking ground rapidly overseas. These tidy-looking, hand-finished cast aluminium-fronted speakers are manufactured in India. This particular model has a largish trapezoidal box shape that’s wider at the back than the front, to minimise internal reflections. (The other models are all aluminium – these ones have MDF sides.)
I was really surprised with how good they sounded straight out of the box, especially considering they were competing with systems that cost significantly more.
Overall the sound was clean and open, with excellent transient response, solid bass and outstanding stereo imaging. The 150W bass and 100W treble amps coped well when driven hard, remaining clear at all volumes.
At this price range they’re perfect for someone with a mid-size project studio or home studio who would normally be buying something like the Mackie 8” systems or similar – in fact I swapped them out with some original-model Mackie 8” speakers in the studio at work, and immediately the sound was much improved.

Sonodyne SLF210

The SLF210 meets the .1 channel need most effectively. A high excursion 10" subwoofer device with LF extension to 28 Hz makes it an ideal mate to the SM. Variable phase, corner frequency, and level are displayed on the baffle, with level and power on the remote. A 'movie' mode electronically enhances critical frequencies required for .1 channel monitoring.
